Labor’s plan to support young women into construction
A re-elected Labor Government will double the try-a-trade program to 10 public schools, supporting more women into construction careers.
Initiatives like the try-a-trade program are proven to increase job opportunities for women in construction.
During the semester-long Women in Construction elective subject, students are able to learn about the diverse career opportunities available in the construction industry and hear directly from industry professionals.
The expansion of the try-a-trade program will allow 2000 year 8 students to participate in the curriculum-based unit of the program, and 220 year 9 and 10 students into the work experience element of the program on an annual basis. The schools chosen to participate in the program will be based on need and demand across the public school system.
Throughout this campaign, Labor has outlined a practical plan to enable the construction of 30,000 new homes by the end of 2030.
We also have a comprehensive pipeline of both new and renewed infrastructure projects, including light rail to Commonwealth Park, a new aquatic centre, a new transformation of the Canberra Theatre and a new Northside Hospital.
To deliver these projects, Labor will support further education and training opportunities particularly in professional services and construction. This nation-leading program is creating the pipeline of workers that our construction industry needs to complete these big and small projects for our growing city.
It’s all part of our progressive, practical and proven plans for Canberra.
