Funding boost for food banks

Labor will establish a $1.5 million Food Bank Fund to support food banks and community organisations who provide Canberrans with access to food relief and essential grocery items.

Existing organisations experiencing greater demand will be able to apply for one-off top up payments from the fund.

Food banks, food re-distribution and informal food pantries across Canberra have reported greater demand on their services as cost-of-living pressure continues to be felt across the country.

The announcement builds on the $913,000 for food relief in the 2024-25 ACT Budget - recognising the valuable support our community sector provides to Canberrans in need.

Cost-of-living pressures are being felt across the country, and that’s why we’re helping tens of thousands of Canberrans with their everyday costs.

We know that some households are doing it tough right now, and Labor is continuing to support Canberrans who are most impacted.

That’s why we’re helping tens of thousands of Canberra families with their everyday costs.

From free 3-year-old preschool, free public transport on Fridays, up to $500 for local apprentices, covering the cost of school expenses, a Chromebook for every public-school student, free healthcare close to home, Energy Price Relief Rebates and cheaper caravan and trailer registration.

It’s all part of our progressive, practical and proven plan for Canberra.
