Martin is the son of nurses. His dad, nearly 70 now, grew up in poverty. He wouldn't leave a single bean in the tin when it was his turn to make dinner. His mum was the daughter of teachers. For both his parents, a career in nursing provided housing, security and opportunity.
And when he finished school, Martin was the first in his family to go to university. His first job afterwards was with the nurses and midwives union. He liked to tell nurses when out organising in hospitals and aged care homes that he went from listening to nurses complain for free at home - to getting paid for it, and more importantly, being able to do something about it.
He started work with Andrew Barr when he was Deputy Chief Minister, and worked across the housing and treasury portfolios. From the biggest public housing investment since self-government to building Canberra’s light rail, Martin knows the difference that progressive and practical policies make – because he’s been a part of delivering them.
At home, Martin’s a single parent and his daughter goes to North Ainslie primary. She's strong, smart and asks straight questions. And she’s also no stranger to the Dickson Walk-in Centre – which is why Martin knows first-hand the difference free public healthcare makes for families. And why he’ll work to make even better health services available, closer to home, for more Canberrans.
He’s also a volunteer firefighter, joining up when he was a teenager. Over the years he’s seen the impact climate change has had up close, and so he knows from experience why our nation-leading climate policies matter. From organising for nurses to working in government and volunteering as a firefighter, Martin knows the difference Labor governments make.
And that's why Martin's running as a Labor candidate for Kurrajong.
