The International Affairs Policy Committee

The International Affairs Policy Committee meets monthly to discuss a variety of topics. Over the past twelve months these have included:

  • Immigration regulatory reform
  • The financial dependence of many Australian universities on foreign students
  • Human rights in Kashmir to show that we care
  • Climate change as a matter of national security
  • Taiwan
  • Nuclear policy, safety and disarmament - including a formal submission to Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs
  • The Nauru manager being a U.S. contractor
  • Offshore detention
  • Weapons to Ukraine
  • The Middle East including Israel, Gaza and Iran
  • Divestment from companies connected to human rights violations in occupied Palestine
  • Statehood for Palestine
  • To assist Indonesia, develop their new capital city, Nusantara, drawing on the Canberra experience
  • Defence funding
  • Cyber security

The highlight was undoubtedly the November 2024 AUKUS seminar we organised, with Professor High White and Ms Jennifer Parker as guest speakers.  It received a good attendance and generated much discussion, which continued even after the formal close. This has also resulted in a motion we have sent to several politicians, supporting the Parliamentary Inquiry into the AUKUS Trilateral Security Partnership.

Moving forward, if there are topics in out subject areas – Foreign Affairs, Defense, Trade and sister cities, we would be happy to include them in future meetings for discussion, with the aim of providing quality feedback to you.
