Election Commitments in Housing

2016 Federal Election Commitments > Housing

Labor recognises that good, secure home is fundamental to all other aspects of life – school, work, good health, friendships, comfort, security, and happiness. Canberrans support the use of community resources to provide housing support for those who struggle to afford it.

Together with the community, successive Labor governments in the ACT have maintained and expanded the most significant social housing system in Australia, with some 30 dwellings per 1,000 people against a national average of 17 per 1,000.

We have kept these homes in public hands for the public good. Since 2007 the government has also implemented an ambitious affordable housing action plan with 98 individual measures targeted at improving housing affordability for all Canberra home buyers and renters.

What we have achieved

  • Provided homes for more than 22,000 people in 11,612 public and community housing dwellings
  • Maintained Australia’s lowest rate of rough sleeping
  • Delivered a third Affordable Housing Action Plan, using land supply and targeted supports to help more Canberrans into affordable housing
  • On track for 1,000 affordable new homes through investment in CHC Affordable Housing
  • Continuing the most ambitious community housing upgrade in the ACT’s history, by replacing 1,288 public housing dwellings with more modern, efficient and accessible homes

What we are doing

Housing affordability and homelessness remain challenges in every state and territory. In government, ACT Labor will keep working to help provide or keep people in a steady home because not only is it best for those people, but because it saves the community far higher costs which can result from homelessness – for example in health, crisis accommodation and legal services.
